Waterside living...

I spent a few hours at Port Solent, a new(ish) marina near Portsmouth. It seems to have all the right ingredients: boats, fancy waterside apartments, and ‘the Boardwalk’, which turns out to be an uninspiring collection of retailers and restaurants. Maybe the architects wanted to recreate a San Francisco vibe, a ‘Fisherman’s Wharf’ scenario. But the whole is less than the sum of the parts, and this pale pastiche was almost deserted. The boats sat at their moorings, a few people congregated in Wetherspoons, and less than a dozen people (including me) saw Boyhood at the nearby cinema…

Asylum to apartments...

The snow’s arrived, but I have articles to write… so no time to be out and about with my camera. The hospital in Guiseley, Leeds (‘lunatic asylum’, as it used to be known) has a new lease of life as upmarket apartments…

There aren't many quiet times in the Lake District, but January is one. There's hardly anyone around, and the weather hasn't helped: soggy, dark and gloomy. But the roads are clear, you don't have to fight your way to the bar - if you can find a pub that's open - and maybe the sun will come out for long enough to take a few pix...
