I remember watching the Ronettes, in black & white, on our tiny Bush TV (a set so basic that to adjust the contrast or ‘vertical hold’ required a screwdriver). The sight of three gorgeous girls, with hair swept up into towering beehives, sashaying across the stage and singing “Baby, I love you”, was enough to propel me into early-onset puberty.
