This is the sound mirror at Kilnsea, one of a number built on the north-east coast during World War I to give early warning of the approach of enemy aircraft. The concave shape ‘focused’ the engine noise onto a microphone, which amplified the sound. With faster aircraft, and the invention of Radar, the sound mirror became obsolete...
